Tips for a great but low budget wedding – Part 4

Tips on Throwing a Low Budget, High Class Wedding

Unlike most women, when I got engaged I only knew I wanted a few things – a New York City wedding that felt personal, not cookie-cutter and I wanted it to be fun. I just had one problem – a small budget.

My mission quickly became clear: to create a beautiful, upscale, memorable wedding for a small amount of money in one of the most expensive cities in the world.

I knew it would not be easy. I began investigating scouring bridal magazines and searching the Internet. The advice I found was not realistic for me and often simply not right apparently, I have expensive taste. Here’s a sampling of what I found:

- Get married in someone’s home or backyard

- Enlist family and friends to create a pot-luck meal

- Create floral arrangements yourself or use fake flowers instead of hiring a florist

- Recruit someone you know to photograph the day

- Create a playlist and hook your iPod up to speakers in lieu of a band or DJ

- Make invitations on your computer

- Hire a wedding planner to get deals from vendors

- Only invite family

I began to get frustrated. Was I going to be able to make this work? There was no home to get married in, I was not going to ask people to spend the day sweating in the kitchen, I envisioned getting my hair and makeup done the day of my wedding not getting pricked by thorns, I wanted pictures that were in focus and my grandkids could look at some day, bands and DJs introduce the bride and groom and play to the crowd to keep everyone dancing, if I made my own invitations they would look like a child made them, wedding planners end up costing you more (they charge their own high fees), we had friends that were just as close as family. Well, I persevered and pulled it off. Here, I have outlined my advice for you.

Research

Researching, reading, joining wedding sites/blogs and getting referrals are your best resources. In the beginning, middle and end, you will find anything you need to know with some investigating. For example, approximately what percentage of your budget you will need for your caterer, how to find a make-up artist and what you need to do to get a marriage license in your state. You’ll also find little known but wonderful professionals as well as advice and reviews on any vendors you are curious about. Many vendors will give discounts for referrals so don’t be afraid to use your connections. Also look for bargains on supplies and info on sales. If
